I wonder why Dietrich, (Hans Gudegast), never was relieved of his command, after LOSING to the Rat Patrol every week for 2 years?

There were no Yanks at Tobruk. Any person driving a jeep in that manner would deserve court-martial. There was bugger all equipment and what there was was carefully husbanded. This series is an insult to the Australians and elements of the British military. On surprise attacks the jeeps were carefully idled as explosives were attached then on withdrawal the vehicles would rev up and use their machine guns.
Just a Yank Chick and couch potatoe flick.

I remember my Rat Patrol toy/model set as a kid. Came with a German MK IV tank, two jeeps, some army guys and a plastice sand dune with a palm tree on it.

I liked this as a kid and I still love the theme song...

@DaChieftain Ahh! Then you probably already know that most of the early LRDG was made up of New Zealanders. Apparently Percy Hobart liked them. They were very well suited to the task. You may have heard of the group which walked a couple of hundred miles into Chad after an ambush. That takes skill.

@tnuh55 -- The Long Range Desert Group was actually sorta like that. Jeeps with .50 cal machine guns attached, roaring in, shooting up the Germans, roaring out. Always heavily outnumbered. Harum-scarum stuff -- it makes fascinating reading. They ultimately became the SAS: probably the best elite fighting group in the world.
"The Rat Patrol" is obviously an embellishment on what actually happened. But it's not too far from the truth.

@Camerameister1 -- Yup. The North African campaign was mostly fought by British Empire troops, including Aussies and Kiwis. The US entered that conflict toward the end.
The SAS originated there, initially as a part of the Long Range Desert Group.
Charles Upham VC was awarded his second Victoria Cross for acts of valor in North Africa. He was a New Zealander -- the only combat trooper ever to be awarded the VC twice.
So, no surprises to see Christopher George in an Aussie hat.

In the early seventies when my father owned a restaurant the waitresses were passing around a "Playgirl" mag with Christopher George as the centerfold.

It was on ABC network-I think one season was filmed in Spain and the other in California. They certainly did take a lot of shortcuts in equipment,uniforms,weapons....
.and plot. Didn't seem to worry about realism much-just escapist adventure. -
@mcfrdmn never seen it b4 but like the theme
All that wasted armament and manpower to take on Rommel. All they needed was 2 jeeps and a couple of air cooled Browning's!

I loved this show when I was a kid. It was only on for two or three seasons. Chris George was my favorite character actor back then. This brings back a few memories.
