If you want a bike that can do it all, maybe cyclocross is your call. Cyclocross is a style of racing where you race a little on pavement and trail. Cyclocross bicycles have road bike geometry and components, yet tires with a wider diameter so they can handle uneven surfaces very well. They're very tough and light so it's more efficient than a mountain bike if you are riding on more surfaces than just trails. If you want a bicycle that you can ride when it's cold, snowy, and rain...a cyclocross bike is a good choice.
@killerwalnuts what and then tape them together?

I have an idea! Instead of a hybrid, get two bikes.

Although I think the sport of cyclocross is really awesome, if you really want to do actual mountain biking, don't get a cyclocross or any other style hybrid. If you want to do light trails, and I mean LIGHT, then a bike with those size tires would do well. I'm not saying it cannot be done but it is so much easier and better to get a real mountain bike.

You can't go wrong with cyclocross bike. You decide you fancy tarmac more - change the tires to slicks; you decide you prefer mountain biking more - get two all terrain tires and put them onto the same rims that you already have! Go outside and have fun!
