SIDNEY - Relatives of a Canadian journalist killed in Afghanistan are mourning together in Vancouver tonight. Michelle Lang, a reporter with the Calgary Herald, was killed yesterday along with four Canadian soldiers when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Kandahar city. Cousins from Victoria went to Vancouver today to be with Lang's parents during this difficult time.
"This was a good career move for her. I'm so happy she got to do what she loved," said Lang's cousin Ellen Newman as she waited to board a BC ferry from Swartz Bay to Tsawassen this afternoon. She hopes Lang will be remembered as a kind, caring person who loved being a journalist.
Saanich-Gulf Island MP Gary Lunn spent time with Lang in Afghanistan while on a mission to visit the troops and delivering Olympic mittens. "We had breakfast together on Christmas Day," he said in disbelief of Lang's death. He said she was eager to tell Canadians about what was happening in Afghanistan.
Prime Minister Harper released a statement saying Lang "courageously risked her life reporting from one of the world's most dangerous countries."
The Military has identified the four soldiers as 28 year old Sgt. George Miok, 21 year old Cpl Zachery McCormack, 21 year old Pte. Garrett Chidley and 28 year old Sgt. Kirk Taylor.
