@the06rebel - not only did they "attempt" the song, but they wrote it. Hank III digs their version - that's why he covers it, and that's one of the reasons he brought them on tour with him.

Hank III did not write this song Those Poor Bastards did. Hank covered this song because he is a fan of their music, so before any one else comments on how much better Hank is think about what are you saying and realize Hank is a fan of their music. Also when they opened for Hank, Hank came out on stage and sang with them on more then one song.
