@cbb7uk That is what he has done, by placing her foot in the cross position over her other leg and then leaning to the side of the piriformis muscle. If she were leaning away, your point would be correct, but she is leaning in the direction of. . thereby putting tension on those fibers. It's just like the normal piriformis stretch, but seems to allow for a greater tension.

completely off-topic, but this guy got really fat if you compare this video to his newer ones... O_o

@cbb7uk . You are absolutely correct. Although a good stretch , it is NOT isolating and lengthening the Piriformis and other External Hip Rotators.

I have had severe Sciatica due to an L5/S1 disc bulge. My pain kept me from exercising, which I think weakened my piriformis. My leg/foot was going numb, and I've had serious pain near hip, buttock and upper thigh. Doing a variation of this stretch where I put the lead arm back and out on the painful side, and then almost sitting back onto the pain, and this I believe has not fixed everything, but has kept away the leg numbness and severe leg pain. I scoured the internet looking for helpful

Dear Mr. Tuminello,
In your article, what do you mean with posterior hip capsule? are you talking about the capsule or the three big ligaments?
How is the posterior capsule stretched by outward rotation and abduction? this would shorten the posterior aspect and lengthen the anterior one.

Above 60 deg. (of hip flex) m. piriformis is a internal rotator.
