Part 25 in a series that takes a look at the history of one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time, chronicling the many recurring themes, characters and monsters that have appeared over the years. This entry focuses on the many incarnations of the resurrecting fire-bird, Phoenix. Enjoy!

Notes regarding this video (please read before commenting!):

- For the entire series, I have simply gathered video footage from various sources on YouTube and compiled them together. I've done this only to entertain the many fans of Final Fantasy here on YouTube, so with that said, many thanks to all the folks who took the time to record the game footage.

- Again, for the whole series, I've focused solely on the main games. Remakes and updates of those games are featured, but I've opted to skip games like Tactics, FFX-2 and such. I had to draw the line somewhere to keep a reasonable length.

- Missing the Phoenix that appears in FFIII. For this game, it's just a normal monster, which made finding footage a pain.

- Phoenix appears in the lore of FFXI as some kind of deity that inhabits a samurai's sword, but as a user explained to me, when he summons her, all you see is a bunch of fire.

  • What about FF Unlimited?

  • This series only covers the main games in the franchise.

  • Hey-o! I'm loving these videos. Great compilations. I was curious if you caught that phoenix was in ff11 too. he was in the form of Tenzen's sword for that game.

  • I tried, but finding the footage was tricky. I made a note of it in the description though.

  • There's a cutscene after the omega/utima fight where tenzen seems to summon phoenix from his sword, but all you see if a bunch of fire. Dunno if that counts.

  • Cool, I was wondering about that. Well, considering it seems pretty minor, looks like I'll leave the video as is. Thanks for letting me know man.

  • VIII and IX had the coolest-looking versions. The fire outline! Good god, the fire outline!

Also, Vaan's victory pose was... interesting.

  • Phoenix was actually Lenna's dragon Hiryuu in FF5, when it gave the last of it's power to transform into an Esper (summon), it was very helpful afterwards, especially while fighting powerful bosses like Azulmagia and Exdeath, or enemies like Hades, but it requires 99 MP to be summoned WOOT, but not too much for it's advantages in my opinion.

  • @WhiteLycanXII i think valefor was ment 2 be

  • @HeavyMetalBeliever Yeah, well. I liked Valefor in her own right, even if her Overdrive didn't resurrect party members.

  • @WhiteLycanXII We had Valefor though. Which sort of counts. Well, not really but still.

  • I have to say my favourite version has to be FFVIII's Summons. I love the fact that--once you summon the Phoenix--it will come out if the entire party is dead although it's a rarity it is useful.

  • is it just me, or is almost everything in FF7 oversized?

  • u didnt show the Phoenix fron ff9 when the entire party is dead, that right there was 1 of the coolest features ive seen Phoenix perform

  • Behold the awesome power of MEGA ULTRA CHICKEN!!! XD

  • sorry but phoenix at FF9 is the best of all
