A short video of West Grinstead railway station in West Sussex taken on Monday 19th October 2009. The station was located on the Shoreham to Horsham line between Southwater and Partridge Green. It opened on 1st July 1861 and was built with two platforms with its station building on a higher level than that of the platforms. It had a goods yard with a cattle loading bay and facilities for handling horse boxes. With the hunt kennels and national stud based in the area, the station saw substantial horse traffic. The station closed on 7th March 1966 as a result of the "Beeching Axe" and has now formed part of the Downs Link footpath. To this day, part of the station building and both platforms have survived, as has many other railway relics from those days of steam, including part of the hand winched yard crane. Sadly the footbridge, original road bridge, platform waiting rooms, etc were dismantled when the railway closed.

  • Is that signal an original feature? I don't remember it being there when I last rode the Downs Link. Mind you I haven't ridden it for over ten years!

  • Thanks for the comment. I think the signal is a fairly recent addition and not originaly from this station. I understand some of the volunteers that maintain this station also volunteer at the Bluebell Railway, so I guess its possible the signal may have been donated by them.
