The real problem is the trailer fell off the end of the boat ramp.

You can actually leave the plug out of it all you want. As long as it doesn't have a bunch of anchors in it that boat can be completely swamped and not sink (it's required by law).
However, you will probably end up with some nasty repair bills for the electronics that were flooded.

I forgot to plug mine like on 4 different occasion, due to being the only trying to remember all the stuffs out of 4 people, had a very very close call once. These days, I make sure every one double check all the work before launching my boat.
