As part of their efforts to plug holes in Governor Corzine's 2009 budget, New Jersey Democrats have raided the Shore Protection Fund and diverted $9 million for other purposes.
The Shore Protection Fund exists to provide a stable source of funding for coastal projects such as beach replenishment, dune reconstruction and flood prevention. These projects are critical in our efforts to protect coastal residents and New Jersey's tourism industry.
Tourism is the second largest industry in New Jersey, generating more than $30 billion a year in economic activity and supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs.
New Jersey has received tens of millions of dollars from the federal government to match money provided for beach replenishment projects from the Shore Protection Fund, protecting both coastal communites and the Shore's tourism economy.
By diverting $9 million from the Shore Protection Fund, New Jersey Democrats have put these projects at risk by jeopardizing the free federal matching dollars that make the completion of these projects possible.
