the oil light stays on when the bug is not running! i was thinking of swapping out the generator from the 61 to the 68! any suggestion will help! thanks

Back in the day, the story was that you get the engine started into position, then turn the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the engine mounting bolts little by little. The teeth on the flywheel are sufficient to cut out their own clearance.
Dunno how well this might actually work, but that was the story.

There were changes, you need the correct axles for your tranny.

Hey Chris I Have a 61 bug and im trying to install a 68 engine. i grind the bell housing and the motor fit. when we got done wiring the engine the bug would not start! when we try to connect the battery the battery sparks and the generator gets hot and the bug is converted to a 12 volt

@jbuloke something is not wired right, something is crossed, not grounded, etc

This is way too hard. Just bolt the motor in and turn the crank till you draw engine in and then bolt up and start engine to finish the job. unbolt and slide off and wipe case clean and reassemble. takes about a 1/2 total. the touchy feely method takes too long and does not make sure the cut is parallel with the crankshaft..

@tetontent Not that hard really. But the best way is to just get the 1966 flywheel that can keep your car 6 volts and has the correct teeth.
