The reggae band UB40 was formed in Birmingham, England by several friends standing in a welfare line. The name "UB40" is a reference to an unemployment form issued by the Department of Health and Social Security--Unemployment Benefit, Form 40.
Band Members
UB40 was led by guitarists and vocalists Ali and Robin Campbell. Other members included Earl Falconer (bass), Brian Travers (saxophone), Mickey Virtue (keyboards), Jim Brown and Norman Hassan (both percussion), and Astro Wilson (toaster). Members encompassed many different ethnic backgrounds, including English, Irish, Scottish, Jamaican and Yemeni.
Musical Influences
Much of UB40's music was inspired by reggae and ska tunes overheard at parties in Birmingham's multiracial Balsall Heath district. Early songs were often politically charged, such as the song "One in Ten," which dealt with the U.K.'s high unemployment rate; by the late 80s, however, the band had more or less abandoned political themes in favor of releasing classic cover songs.
Hit Songs
UB40 has put out a plethora of hit songs, many reggae-style releases of classic hits, including Neil Diamond's "Red, Red Wine" (which it performed for Nelson Mandela in 1988). It recorded Elvis Presley's "I Can't Help Falling in Love" and Al Green's "Here I Am."
Legacy
UB40 is the world's most successful reggae band, having sold over 55 million records and put out a number of chart-toppers. Nearly all of the original members of the band are still together after 30 years, and the band continues to perform reggae all over the world.
