A high resolution simulation of a Carey mask using Niels Noordhoek's Maskulator software.
A Carey mask is a device for accurately focussing an astronomical telescope. The mask is attached to the front of the scope and the diffraction pattern is used to show when perfect focus is achieved.
When the spacing between the elongated spikes is equal on the left and right then the focus error is zero.
See http://www.btinternet.com/~gfcarey/careymask.htm for an explanation of how it works.
