BOURRET DISHES OUT FOUR ASSISTS AS SEA DOGS ROUT REMPARTS 6-0
The Saint John Sea Dogs reclaimed sole possession of first place in the QMJHL's overall standings on Sunday afternoon, soundly defeating the Quebec Remparts by a score of 6-0 at Harbour Station in a much-anticipated battle between two of the top five teams in the country. In one of their best performances of the season, Saint John (18-3-0-2) dominated the proceedings from start to finish, making a deafening declaration regarding their status as one of the Canadian Hockey League's most talented teams in the process.
A balanced attack and solid defensive play paved the way to victory for the Sea Dogs on Sunday, as six different skaters found the back of the net for the home side while the Remparts' high-octane offence was held to just 22 shots on goal -- all of which were stopped by overage goaltender Jacob DeSerres. At the other end of the ice, Louis Domingue and Jimmy Appleby combined to make 29 saves in a losing effort for the visitors.
Second-year blue-liner Gabriel Bourret dished out four assists on the day to earn his second consecutive First Star of the Game award, while Steven Anthony (0G-2A-2P), Stephen MacAulay (1G-1A-2P), Tomas Jurco (1G-1A-2P), and Jonathan Huberdeau (1G-1A-2P) all turned in multi-point performances for the Sea Dogs as well. Mike Thomas, Stanislav Galiev, and Pierre Durepos also scored for Saint John in the one-sided affair. Click HERE to view a complete box score from Sunday's highly-impressive home effort.
The Sea Dogs drew first blood on Sunday as import winger Tomas Jurco beat Domingue on a short-side wrist shot midway through the first period. Gabriel Bourret and sophomore scoring sensation Jonathan Huberdeau both drew helpers on Jurco's man-up marker. Saint John went up 2-0 courtesy of Washington Capitals prospect Stanislav Galiev, who wired home a crisp feed from veteran forward Steven Anthony at the end of an impressive down-ice rush to improve his 2010-11 goals total to ten 13:07 into the opening frame. Shediac, NB native Pierre Durepos then put the Sea Dogs up by three a moment later, rifling a wrist shot past Domingue from the slot area to register his first goal of the season.
A turnover by the Remparts in neutral territory led to Saint John's fourth goal of the afternoon as Tomas Jurco and Jonathan Huberdeau jointly exploited the misstep to full effect, promptly breaking into Quebec's zone on a two-on-none rush that concluded with Huberdeau sliding a nifty backhander past a sprawling Domingue in the seventeenth minute of play. Rookie net minder Jimmy Appleby took over goaltending duties for the Remparts following Huberdeau's even-strength tally.
Saint John's offensive onslaught carried over into period number two, with Team Captain Mike Thomas roofing a close-range wrister over Appleby's left shoulder at the 6:35 mark of the stanza to give the hosts a 5-0 advantage. Thomas' linemate Stephen MacAulay then got in on the action, deftly carrying the puck out from behind Quebec's net and burying his sixth of the year to put his team up by an unconverted touchdown in the 36th minute of play.
Regulation's final frame saw the Sea Dogs' march towards victory continue unabated, with DeSerres adding seven saves to his daily total in picking up the second shutout of his season. Saint John registered eight shots on goal during the third period to conclude the match having outshot their opponents in all three frames (15-6, 12-9, 8-7).
