Two of our goats gave birth over the weekend. Looks like a third is due any day. Unfortunately, while one of the mothers went into labor and had two healthy twins without us even knowing (she was fast, and most of the signs weren't there so we weren't sure of it until "Uhh... there's kids in there with her..."), the other mother, Starburst, was not so lucky.
Her labor was too long, and we ended up having to do emergency C-section on her. Only one of the babies survived, the little guy in this video, who has been named Bennett. Both he and his brother were oxygen deprived, so they were very, very weak coming out and the other kid only managed to take a couple of breaths before passing away.
Sadly, the trauma was too much for Starburst. She was still alive when I filmed this video, but rejected the baby and could not pass the placenta despite our efforts to help her. It went necrotic and she died the next day. She's greatly missed. :(
The good news is, Benny has taken a much better turn, despite his difficult start, and even more surprising is that Lucy, the mother of the twin LaMancha kids born the day after this guy was, readily adopted him. Those of you who know goats know how rare this is! She will still need help - her milk supply is unusually low as it is - but that takes a major load off and will give him someone to play with. He's much stronger now and very affectionate to anyone who will give him attention.
RIP, Starburst. :(
Bennet is so adorable! I've never seen a black goat before! :)
