Malta: Qormi - Feast of St Sebastian 2009
The Parish Church:
As Qormi was growing, there was a need of a second parish and in 1935 St Sebastian's church was created as the second parish with Fr Alwig Psaila as its first Parish Priest. The original church became too small for the now growing population and in 1947, the first stone was laid for a new parish church. A crypt was built which was used till 1982 when the present beautiful church was completed.
The stone statue which is found in front ot the old parish church was made in 1815.
The titular statue of St Sebastian which was carved by George Borg and arrived in Qormi in 1938. The feast is celebrated yearly on the 3rd Sunday of July.
The Band Club:
The Pinto Philharmonic Society's St Sebastian Band, participated in the feast of St Sebastian in 1895 when this feast was a secondary feast in Qormi which took part in the Old Parish Church.
The background music is the march "Insellmulek Sebastiano" (We salute you, Sebastian) composed by Mro Dominic Darmanin and we also hear the beautiful popular hymn of St Sebastian "F'Jum il-Ferh tal-Kbira Festa" (In the day of joy of the great feast). The music of this hymn is by Composer Vincenzo Bugeja, lyrics by Francis Abela and it dates till 1937
