FreeChex III - The Fastest way to make your own Gas Checks (FreeChex 3)

Approximately two years ago I purchased a FreeChex II from a guy named Charlie on Ebay to make gas checks for my cast bullets. It is a great tool and it has paid for itself many times over. A few months ago Charlie sent me a handmade prototype of his latest invention, the FreeChex III. The FreeChex III is the ultimate gas check making tool. Everytime you pull the handle down on the arbor press another gas check is cut and formed. The design is revolutionary!

This tool is much harder to produce than his previous models, so I don't know when or even if Charlie is going to start selling these to the public. If he does... I would advise anyone serious about casting bullets to getin line as soon as possible. This is the type of thing that comes along only every once in a while and sometimes becomes unavailable shortly afterwards.

I am using a $49 arbor press from Harbor Freight. I notice that in his current Ebay description Charlie recommends using a dowel to push the checks out, which will help keep from wearing the die. Also mine was a prototype, the production design is optimized for ten to twelve thousandths thick material. Mine was designed with slightly different dimensions.

@spritrocks The one I got was a prototype. It works with thickness of aluminum flashing that I buy at home depot. I can't remember the exact thickness off the top of my head. I would expect that different thicknesses and types of material would come out with slightly different dimensions.

FreeChex IIIs have been available for over 6 months.

I have no direct relationship with Charlie, the man who invented and manufactures the FreeChex III. His products are available on Ebay only... as far as I know. He does sell overseas; I have seen positive comments on the reloading forums from people from Australia and Europe.

A gas check is a small cap that fits on the end of your cast bullet.  Generally you only need them for cartridges designed for velocities more than approximately 1400 fps which includes most rifle cartridges and even a few pistol cartridges. At the most basic level they protect the cast bullet from the hot gasses while traveling down your barrel. But there are other mechanisms at work as well. Without them you will have problems with leading in your barrel and reduced accuracy.

of all the videos on youtube for making gas checks yours is by far the best,however if you used aluminium slit to 1/2" wide and run it off a small mandrel you would save yourself a lot of time using the guillotine,less wastage,and nice smooth edges on the strip, so less cuts on your hands!
