derailments happen all the time, blame is usually attributed to the train and then the track or switch, ARTC is the body who run and own the main lines in australia, this was their train, Pacific national has had their share of bad derailments, one in Victoria a couple of yrs ago killed the loco drivers, the aerial view of the wreck was shocking, like a strewn model train set.

Yes, the trucks just sit on top of the wheel sets so if the unit tips or jumps, the trucks and wheels usually part ways. I'm not sure why they are built this way but it no doubt allows for quick changes if you have a bad bearing.

I was just wondering if the wheel sets on freight car trucks are loose. I ask because when I see an accident like this one, I usually see the wheelsets off the trucks.
