Jeffery Smith (Born September 14, 1955, Queens, New York), is a warm and expressive ballad-oriented baritone singer who is a little reminiscent of Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstine. He had a relatively late start in jazz, not recording his first jazz album as a leader until he was almost 40. Smith met Shirley Horn in 1992 and she immediately became a friend and mentor. Excepting Horns advice, Smith signed to the Verve label in 1995. Smith had began honing his voice at a early age under the tutelage of his mother Romona, who was a classical singer herself. So it was fitting that his first album was titled Ramona and it was also produced by his Mentor Horn as well as her accompaniment on the piano.
"Down Here Below" is a song written by Abbey Lincoln.

This is the first time I have heard of Jeffrey Smith.
It would be a great loss had I never heard him sing. His is was a warm and beautiful rendition.
It is a shame the public does not know that there is gold to be mined among the mediocrity they listen to.Thank you rovingi2.
