At the time, African languages were widely dismissed as sounding like "Bongo, bongo" and the tribal lands of Africa were often nicknamed "Bongo bongo land".
Of course, no-one is ever racist today. Just look at the rest of Youtube.

If you give the public the same types of plots, characterisations and attitudes they are used to, you have a greater chance of success. In Victorian times, musical operettas were the "comfort food" entertainment of the (upper)-middle classes. Giving the public proto-versions of 20th century entertainment would have been so mystifying to them that they would have become hostile. Giving them colonial-type racism mixed with all the other attitudes they grew up with would have been far more popular.
