'NATO totally under American thumb'

NATO has pledged seven thousand more troops on top of the 30 thousand the U.S. is sending to Afghanistan. John Laughland, from the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation in Paris, says this contradicts plans to start withdrawing in 2011.

No, Europe actually pays a lot (!) more to the UN than the US, but is divided and less aggressive, so you don't see the influence...

However the majority of the countries are for instance the group77, so the UN certainly is not an US tool. In contrary, the US does not really care much about the UN and prefers to decide for itself, while Russia, China, India, Brazil, Germany, France want to reform the UN and really support it

In the end, I do hope the ASDE and EDA join hands soon and fill in the gap where NATO is lacking. The EU ought to redefine its interests in NATO beyond 'hard power' and in the interest of finding its own special capabilities. The CSTO and NATO will have to face slimming-down. It has already come this far that the OSCE president is bashing the EDA and claim it to be stripping away the OSCE 'working ground'... How about an opt-in for committed member states for a renewed European security pact?

I don't know that. Certainly Russia is not helping the Iranians with a military nuclear development . Just think - what would Russia gain from arming the Islamic neighbour?
