I reeeeeeaaaaaalllly hate him too, and I agree that he is creepy weird. It's not hard to imagine him in his spare time dressing in high-gloss black leather, cock in hand, performing strange pagan rituals or some crazy shit like that...
As for the avatar, I always thought it was a bad-ass looking symbol. I figured hardly anyone would recognize it. I always kinda loosely viewed it as a symbol of rebellion against a corrupt government. I stole it and am applying it to this fascist administration.
