NPPA, The National Press Photographers Association, holds a NewsVideo workshop in Norman Oklahoma every year. It is sort of a boot camp for videographers. I attended as an observer in 1999, and as a shooting participant in 2000. They give you shooting assignments. In these, you get a theme, and can only shoot 4 minutes worth of raw video, which you then have to edit down to a 1 minute piece, telling a story with no audio, and cuts only. All in a few hours. It's harder than you think. Try it sometime. Everyone in your group reviews all the raw material, critiquing everyone's raw footage. Then they critique your final.
These are two of my three assignments: Smoking and Costumes.
I was close to getting "best editor" for the workshop, but my third assignment had a glaring spelling error. So that sucked.
I added music later for my demo reel.

  • i would love to go to one of these workshops... as for me, i know what its like to stay close to your roots, and i would never become one of the "a-holes" you speak of

  • NPPA teaches young kids how to shoot cool, artistic news pkgs...then they grow up and are forced to shoot sh*t pkgs in big markets...then they become the old, disgruntled a-holes that they never thought they would become ;-(
