Danzig is not a orginal name of Gdansk. Just Germans cannot spell Gdansk, so they called it Danzig

Yes... GDAŃSK is first, oryginal name of the City (latin records/text: "Gyddanyzc urbs" in 999 AD., "Gdansk", "Kdanzk" etc. in XI, XII, XIII centuries). It is Polish (Slavic) name. First german name "Danzk" is from XIII century.

@ztinad For sure there were a lot of Germans and Dutch in ancient Gdańsk, but nationalities has nothing to do with history elder then 19-th Century, that's why Polish Navy admiral's name was Joseph von Unruh (Józef Unrug) and famous German actor from Sopot (Zoppot) was named Mikołaj Nakszyński (better known as Klaus Kinski). :-D

2.. @ztinad...Your surname “G'Danitz / Gdanitz” sounds as old polish word "Gdaniec”. “Gdaniec”, in modern polish language is "Gdańszczanin", in german language is “Danziger”, in english language means “inhabitant of Gdańsk"... So I’m sure, that You had Polish ancestors from Gdańsk city... :-)

Dear @ztinad... Your surname is very similar to Polish (Slavic) name of city GDAŃSK. German name DANZIG is “mutation” of primary Polish name. It was simplest (easiest) for germanspeaking. Gdańsk until XIII cent. was polishspeaking City. City, in XIII-XIX cent., was multilanguage and multicultural (Polish, German, Latina and other). Since 1945/46 year is again Polish. @Svantobor My name is G'Danitz. My family came from there. They spoke German and moved to North West Germany in the late 19th century. We have aways considered ourselves German. The family name G'Danitz/Gdanitz comes from the name of the city. So you are telling me that my forefathers were Slavs and not German? When did people start to have "last names?" Please, let me know as I find this very interesting.
