A quick subway ride from Midtown, Long Island City has quickly become the suburbs inside New York City with the best view of the famous Manhattan skyline.

Long Island City is flanked by the Midtown Tunnel to the south and Queensboro Bridge to the north. It runs along the East River waterfront runs and extends inland to 51st/Hobart Street. Quaint shops, trendy bars and restaurants entice passersby with a range of atmospheres from cozy to contemporary. A major cultural center, LIC is replete with museums, artist lofts as well as many outdoor and indoor galleries.

The history of Long Island City is part of its intrigue. In 1898, 28 years after the original villages and hamlets consolidated themselves into one, Long Island City officially became a part of New York City when the city expanded its borders to include Queens.

The opening of the Queensboro Bridge and other transportation additions made this area even more accessible, which furthered industrial growth here. The decline of manufacturing in the U.S. in the 1970's helped begin to turn this area into a major cultural center with world-class art and working artists. This trend continued in the 21st century with the renovation of warehouses into luxury condos. Today, businesses and residents alike seek out the convenience of Long Island City.

  • dont listen to dis bullcrap.

LIC is ghetto they have luxury apts. with quennsbridge projects across the street. dangerous.

  • @keinaan12345 - LIC is definitely diverse - there are still all kinds of people and definitely different price levels. I would certainly not call it "ghetto" though - there are extremely safe and interesting areas I'd recommend to families to check out any day.

  • LIC is a great place. I stayed there during 9 nights and I don't have complains. When I go to NYC again I am sure that I will stay there again.

  • keep the city!!!!

  • @tfcornerstone What, Keinaan is right, you obv. dont live anywhere near here. Astoria is diverse, LIC has just poor people. And its super dangerous. Half of that shit is abandoned warehouses. Dont even man.

  • The video is super nice , I lived in QueensBridge 10 years went to LIC high School and worked my way to the UWS. LIC isn't so bad at all when I visit it's like a watered down jersey except with every culture in it that you can imagine.

  • I HATE U DIRTTY HIPSTERS AND YUPPIES...GO BACK TO WHEVER U CAME FROM!! U THINK YAA MAD COOL ALL OF NYC HATES U GO BACCK 2 IDAHO OR OKLAHOMA U FUCKAS

  • i know all the spots to get prostitutes around long island city.. this is such a shitty area at night, everynight i see a tourist getting jacked for there shit

  • why take the tunnel when you can take the bridge, only idiot from long island take the tunnel

  • @keinaan : your comments are very misleading. LIC is a big place and, like any big place, there are better areas than others. But this particular video is about Hunters Point, which is an extremely safe and rather nice area. When people talk about LIC they typically meany Hunters Point, not those areas on the other side of the Queensborough Bridge that you are talking about.

  • they might as well put the luxury apts on the water by 3rd ave in the BX, LIC is the queens version of hunts point...a shithole with two huge housing projects Queensbridge(largest in the USA) and Ravenswood up the block so LIC gets its fair share of scumbags and criminals and from what i hear they are having a very hard time finding people to pay for the over priced apartments they have put up...good job bloomberg for once again aiding in the overdevelopment of a nyc neighborhood
