Drew Westen analyzes the rousing speech Lyndon Baines Johnson gave demanding the passage of thte 1965 Voting Rights Act, and shows how his rhetoric won the hearts of the electorate
Westen is provocative&thoughtful but he is not right about some things. Much of the reason Democrats are repressed is the average American is socialized to ignore the Democratic message. Change, justice, and Liberal values have been associated with crime, abuse, decline in America, loss, etc. Americans are rednecks, Americans that use violence and create hell are rednecks, and the Liberals talk alot but do not have the power or take the risk anymore to exert control.
Dear sondano - you might find reading Westen's book useful. It would help you understand why the speech worked, and why more modern ' cheese' works today. The problem isn't with voters, it's with our hardwired brains.
That was one freaking cheesy speech. Is this the stuff that "moves" Americans? Then the problem is with the voters not with candidates who try to be rational.
