The very pretty "It's Not For Me To Say" was written by Robert Allen and Al Stillman for the 1957 MGM film "Lizzie" starring Eleanor Parker. Johnny recorded the song for the film with orchestra arranged and conducted by Ray Coniff, and it became his first Top 10 hit in May of that year.

  • i find this incredible to believe, but, someone told me that the ONLY number one hit that johnny ever had, was his duet with deneice williams...too much, too little, too late....this can't be true....or is it??????anyone know....thx in advance....

  • @smush48 That very well may be without looking it up to verify it. Johnny's career started while Elvis was topping the charts, and most of the hits he is best remembered for like "Chances Are", "Misty", etc. came during a time when rock and roll rather than beautiful ballads ruled the day.

  • Johnny Mathis could sing the Oscar Meyer Weiner song and it'd sound romantic !

  • When I hear Johnny Mathis's voice, I know there is a little bit of Heaven on Earth.

  • "Have some coffee, it'll wake you up..."

  • @PaulDePace How to spoil a terrific tribute!

  • @smush48 No, "Chances Are" was a no. 1 for him in 1957 (I think). CA is on here, too, and as incredible as this wonderful song.

  • i was sixteen when this great record was released, so in love........... brings tears to my eyes each time i hear it. i wonder where she is now........... nearly fifty years on.

  • Yeah, it's really important to know about his sex life when discussing his music.

  • I saw Johnny Mathis at the Carousel theatre in West Covina, CA on, I am going to say, Christmas Eve 1967... I probably paid $7.50 for those tickets... He was unreal. His voice is like an instrument. I remember sitting there with my girlfriend. We we so in love, it was a perfect date. I am thinking, "Can I even hear a flaw in his voice?" No. Just like these recordings...perfection. My only issue with Johnny Mathis? Gay. Too bad. (Yeah I know, guilty as charged...homophobic.)

  • This one peaked at #2 on the CHUM chart in Canada, but it was his 2nd Top 5 on that chart. Wonderful, Wonderful peaked at #5.

  • Saw Johnny Mathis in Louisville ,KY at the Performing Arts Center 1989, his music is Timeless, Classic, Beautiful.
