Linguist and author, Antonio Graceffo, takes us into his English classroom, where employs a technique called Picture Stories. In this grade one class room, students between the ages of eight and ten come to the board and tell and retell stories in their own words. The method can be used for students of any level, but the unique thing for lower level or younger students is that the pictures are pre-drawn on magnetic cards and hung on the board. This way, over the course of a school year, the teacher can create more and more stories, and add them to the file. Old stories can be recycled as the students ability increases and students will retell the old picture stories with greater detail and more advanced language.

How do you get the kids to understand that you want them to re-tell the story?
kenny77771 7 months ago
@kenny77771 Making the kids understand what you want is one of the huge hurdles of ESL teaching. BUT, once the kids get used to you, they will understand what you want. also you may have some activities that you do frequently and the kids will get better and better at those.
Often, the kids are capable of doing what you ask, but not of understanding the instructions. The two options are, you can re-explain with simpler words, and also do modelling, or you can translate.
