my pup is about 7 weeks old now and i jsut caught a rabbit on a snare thats still alive he bits and steprs on it and the rabbit never moves but its a start what should i do better?

I think your going in the right direction, just keep the pup interested and excited and he will do the rest on instinct. But keep working with him on the basics as they tend to ignore your once they are on the scent.

i just got a puppy and its 6 weeks old and we live in iowa and its in the middle of winter so we keep the pup in the basement. Do you suggest we take the dog out in spring becasue we want this a hunting dog...i need all the suggestions to make a good rabbit dog...Im trying to spend 15 min 3 times a day playing with him and trying to get him to know his name to fetch and bring back a old sock to me... what alse should i do? when should he smell a rabbit? thanks

I took my pup out in the snow and he loves it. I started by using a fresh rabbit that I had taken. I would put my dog inside then drag the rabbit around the yard. I then got the dog out and let him sniff the scent till he got excited then told him rabbit and let him follow it to the carcass. He then got a reward as well as a short amount of time checking out the rabbit. I did this a couple of times and when he would get on a scent and flush a rabbit I would say rabbit and off he would go.
