Medium/heavy rod with 10-20 pound test depending on how good of a fight you want. I use a ball of the 99 cent Albertsons bread on a #2 octopus hook and walk the bank looking in the water for carp. When I see one, or a school, I plop the bread about 3 feet in front of the fish I want. Sometimes they swim off but they come back if they were feeding already.
