Just a happy little video of our dog Jake. He's an almost 4 year-old purebred Cardigan Welsh Corgi and we feel privileged that he's our dog. What a sweet boy! I wish you all could meet him. His coloring is dark brindle and white and while you may be familiar with the other type of Corgi, the Pembroke, there aren't as many of the Cardis around for people to see. We get stopped and asked a lot of questions when we have him out, like, "What happened to his legs?", "How did he get like that?" etc. :-)

A brief description of the breed's origin:

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi have only been regarded as separate breeds for 70 years. There are a number of theories that refer to the origins of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Some believe that both Corgi varieties are descendants of the Swedish Vallhunds that were brought to Wales by the Vikings in the 800s. Another theory is that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two Corgi varieties, and that it was brought to Wales by the Celts in about 1200 BC. The name Corgi is derived from the Celtic word for dog. The breed was developed in Cardiganshire Wales. The breed has a number of natural talents including herding, hunting, and guarding. Because of their low stature, they were able to move out of the way whenever a cow kicked. Both Corgi varieties were interbred until the 1930s, but breeders eventually wanted to accentuate their differences. Today, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is most heavily utilized as a companion dog.

  • i dont wanna sound like a b*tch or something, but your dog need to loose weight! He is young and will die prematurely if he doesnt loose weight. It will destroy his joints and his heart and he can get tons of deseases from it. Consult a vet for help how to get him in shape. Otherwise hes really adorable!

  • Jake came to us nearly 25 lbs overweight when we adopted him. With the help of high quality food, our vet, and a lot of work he's lost 5 lbs in a year. If you know the breed you know they put on weight easily and take it off slowly. You aren't telling me anything I don't already know. You shouldn't judge until you know the facts.

  • @ravensky23 It wasnt to judge you, i only said it to be kind though its always a rather sensitive subject. Lots of dogs are overweight and the owners never realize it until its too late. So im sorry if i sounded harsh.

  • Thanks for clarifying. It's been a struggle with Jake and I worry about him, hence my reaction. We love him to pieces!

  • @ravensky23 Dont worry, i would probably react in the same way in your situation, especially since its hard to read the tone in a written msg. :)

    He really is gorgeous!

  • Thanks! His breeder is really excellent. He got his championship at 9 months, then at 2 years was sold to the woman we got him from. She had a bad back and was going to need surgery to fuse some discs so she couldn't lift him to put him in her van anymore and needed to find a home for him. That's where we came in. I'd been in contact with his breeder for over 5 years waiting for an older retired show dog. Jake is the perfect dog...albeit a couch potato. *sigh*

  • Great dog. I lost my Cardigan in a divorce. She fed Bonnie Brae the way she eats too. SO TOO BIG for a little dog. The good news is Corgi AKA show couple now have her and she is properly cared for now. TREATS are a bad thing. she and I did agility for a short run. I know you are working hard with your Corgi... and more power to you :)

  • He's adorable! The music made me laugh. I just adopted a stray Cardigan Welsh Corgi from the animal shelter and he's doing great. I was afraid he might act up because he was a stray, but he's been the perfect little dog. =3
