@CBPSynergy Second, some basic logic: When you say "learning styles work" and I respond "Where's the evidence?" note that you are making the claim, not me. The burden of proof is on you. Also, evidence for my belief learning styles don't work? Are you really asking me to prove the negative? Really?
Moreover, the use of statistics has given us wonderful advances in aeronautics, medicine, engineering, the social sciences, economics, etc... Why not sell what careful study tells us is helpful?
@CBPSynergy First, studies have discrepant results because experimenters put varying amounts of emphasis on different important variables, or they make errors that are corrected in later studies. Nonetheless, a person can look at all the different studies and see the overall pattern of results. If 200 studies say one thing, and only 5 say another, that's not discrepant, that's obvious. When learning style studies are viewed this way it's obvious from the results that learning styles don't help.
@chrismca - kind of sounds like some professors I know that are not earning a lot of money and questioning sales professionals and business owners who are earning 10 times as much as they are, for evidence to support their position. I guess results are evidence enough for those earning the money that something works.
@chrismca-I think you are maybe confusing beliefs with experiences. You have experiences that lead you to think that somehow stats will prove truth when in reality you can find stats to support almost any position you desire to take. I think a great question may be to ask would be what stats/evidence to you have to support your belief that learning styles don't work and/or that you need stats to support anything. Those who are earning money due to these and other things kind of laugh at this.
@CBPSynergy Thanks for responding, I appreciate it. But, honestly, it looks like you've listed the sources of your belief that learning styles help, but sources of belief aren't the same thing as the evidence you might get from these sources.
In 20+ years of business/sales consulting along with all experience within our company the learning styles along with and understanding and application of personalities does help to better communicate to people in a way they better understand. Those who use this and benefit from it love it. There are certain personalities or types of people where the user of the information does not seem to benefit. If there isn't a benefit to using this, we recommend not to. Hope this helps.
Results of valid, empirical observations of the effects of learning styles on students are clear. The use of learning style information has no effect, or sometimes a harmful effect on learning. Clearly, folks behave unethically when they take peoples time and/or money and don’t provide any evidence on whether an investment in learning styles is a just use of scarce resources.
So I'd challenge the person in this video, Can you offer any valid evidence that it actually help us?
Good questions/thoughts. Applying the different learning styles as well as personality styles is designed to improve understanding/communications. The concept is with stronger communications/understandings better matches of people's needs with specific products/services solutions.
