Andy Kaufman came to Nashville on July 16, 1983 to wrestle Jimmy "Mouth Of The South" Hart at the Fairgrounds Arena. This is the Channel 4 News report on that unusual event. Kaufman & Hart's match resembled a fight between two teenage girls more than a wrestling match. When Kaufman started getting the upper hand, the match was interrupted by a member of Hart's wrestling stable The Giant Rebel (who would go on to fame as Uncle Elmer in WWF) who proceeded to drop a big leg on Kaufman. Afterwards, Kaufman threatens to sue Jimmy Hart, Giant Rebel, Jerry Jarrett, Jerry Lawler & the entire state of Tennessee. My sister & I actually attended this event. When you look at the gene pool present in the crowd, you can see this was quite a challenge, but well worth it to see Andy Kaufman wrestle live!

  • Andy Kaufman was brilliant ! I want the sports casters jacket !

  • Look at the Fairgrounds crowd, those were the days. To the twits here, the sports anchor is Rudy Kalis and he was selling it because back at this time in Nashville, the city only had college sports, a minor league baseball team, racing and pro wrestling to talk about. That's why it was on the news, again, look at the crowd (interest created news back then).

  • oh my god...

a wrestling angle being talked about on the fucking news...shit, those were the fucking days, man... when you could really believe what went on in the ring.

no superheroes, no lunatic characters, just damn good wrestling.

  • if he fooled all the southerners, then why were lawler and hart in on it?

  • By The Southern Rednecks Actually Believing The Point He Made It Just Enhanched The Point That Southerners Are Un-Intellegnt

  • Man, he had the Southerners convinced it was real!

  • haha, southerners were dumb enough to believe this was real

haha, southerners are dumb enough to watch wrestling

    haha

  • Wow great footage! Never seen this peice and I have a lot of Andy! Thanks for sharing!
