Try cycling your glow plugs, that is turn the key to on, let the wait to start light go out, turn the key off, turn it back on, wait to start then start, reply and let me know if that helps, diesels are so much trouble in the cold

How far do you have to drive before the engine is fully warmed up (heat coming out of the vents)?

Duck, I dont think that the engine compression are the problem. In europe, the OM660 CDI ride untile 640000km in Belgium with the original power train. Check the ignition system before checking the compression. How are the performance when the engine is started??
CDI MBZ engine are make to run forever with good maintnance! Even canadian military vehicles are equipe with mercedes-benz CDI engine. So, give me back some new about your tests!
Good luck man!

:D Miss my smart!
It's not suposed to be that hard to start. Do you have take a look to the glow plug resistance? Do you have >12V to the glow plug connector during glowplug cycle?? If not, do you know if the glowplug relay run well? There are a 12 battery power who feed the relay?? Because your OM660 start without glow plug assistance. I'm almost sure!

I know - there's something wrong with my car. The resistance on the glow plugs measures that they are all good, though. The other people on our forum think it's loss of compression because I have so many km's on the engine (265 000).
