http://www.MormonTempleCeremony.net describes more about Mormon temples and their purpose.

In one of his first official acts as President of the Church, Thomas S. Monson dedicated the Rexburg Idaho Temple on February 10, 2008.

The temple overlooks the campus of Brigham Young University--Idaho, and with its brilliant finish of white quartz, it can be seen for miles on Rexburg Hill.

On the day of its dedication, a cornerstone ceremony was led by President Monson, who was joined by others who represent some 47,000 Latter-day Saints in the surrounding area. The Rexburg Idaho Temple is the 125th temple built by the Church worldwide.

In the South Pacific kingdom of Tonga, the temple in Nuku'Alofa has reopened after a complete renovation. This temple in Tonga serves 41,000 Latter-day Saints throughout the islands of the Pacific.

And in Central America, the First Presidency has announced the construction of a new temple in San Salvador, El Salvador. There are currently two operating temples in Central America.
