Iris finds the dejected Hank at the hospital and tells him she knows how much he wanted Tommy to be with him for Christmas. Hank replies that it doesn't look like that's going to happen. She asks if there's any change in Tommy's blood count, and Hank replies that he's waiting to hear and has a meeting with Dr. Frame. Iris says maybe Jamie will have good news, and that Tommy was a lot perkier when she was in with him just now. Hank tells Iris that when Tommy first got hit with this, the doctors gave him a 65-80% chance of recovery. Iris says those are very good odds. Hank asks why his kid has to be on the losing end. Even though nothing is working, Hank keeps hoping. Iris tells him that what they have to do: keep hoping. She remembers going through this with Dennis when he was Tommy's age and had rheumatic fever. She would sit by Dennis's bed watching him suffer, wondering why he had to go through so much pain, and all she could do was pray for miracles. And Dennis didn't die. Hank says he's been praying for miracles too, but so far... Iris says that Tommy is fighting with every breath he takes, and when she sees that, she sees something miraculous every single day. Hank and Iris agree that Tommy is something else. Iris says Tommy is only a little boy, but he needs his daddy. Hank knows Tommy is strong but he's not sure about himself. He's not sure how long he can pretend everything's gonna be all right. Iris tells Hank she's very sure about him. Hank confesses that he went to buy a Christmas tree earlier that day and couldn't do it because he didn't want it in the house if Tommy's going to be someplace else. Iris tells Hank that they're going to go out and buy the biggest, best Christmas tree they can find, and they'll put it in Tommy's hospital room if they have to, and they're going to look forward to it just as much as Tommy does, because they still have Tommy and they still have so much to be grateful. "No wonder Tommy's crazy about you," Hank tells Iris. Then he asks her how this happened. Iris asks what Hank means, and Hank replies, "This," and cups her cheek in his palm.

Meanwhile, Kelsey examines Tommy, who tells her that his glands don't hurt, and he's only having a little trouble swallowing. He asks her how he's doing, and she tells him he's doing better. His fever has gone down, but no skateboarding. Tommy tells Kelsey he's feeling better, though he admits to having some battle fatigue from fighting his illness. Kelsey tells him there's a solution for that, and Tommy replies that he knows the drill: rest, rest, and more rest. Kelsey tells Tommy he's got it. Tommy then says he heard the nurses say that Kelsey won her battle with Dr. Frame. Kelsey isn't sure "won" is the right word, because it cost her a lot. Tommy asks if Kelsey and Jamie are mad at each other, and asks if they're going to become boyfriend and girlfriend again. Kelsey says she thinks they're just going to be friends for right now. When Tommy says they were nuts about each other, Kelsey tells Tommy that she and Jamie hurt each other, and sometimes so much happens that even thought you want things to go back to the way they used to be, they can't. Tommy says he knows what Kelsey means and asks if she misses Jamie. She admits that she does. Tommy understands that. He admits that sometimes he misses his mom. She has a hard time with him being like this, and that's why he doesn't see her very much. Kelsey says she's sure Tommy's mother loves him very much. Tommy says yeah, then adds that he used to hope his parents would get back together again. Kelsey says that would probably be very hard for them and Tommy agrees, saying it would probably be like him trying to get back to the way he was before he was sick. Kelsey asks how, and Tommy says it's tough to explain, but he knows a lot of stuff now that he didn't know back then, stuff that people never learn. Kelsey smiles and says Tommy understands a lot. Jamie enters Tommy's room then and says he thought he'd come by and give Tommy the once-over. Tommy tells Jamie he's too late, Dr. Harrison beat him and she's got all Tommy's stats. Jamie asks how Tommy is doing. Kelsey replies that Tommy is holding his own, as usual. Tommy then tells Jamie and Kelsey that he's fine, but the two of them need some rehab as soon as possible. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
