Depends on the dried sate of the wood.. I've used brich, poplar, aspen, maple, spruce, balsam, jack Pine, and larch.
All work to varying degrees. If the log is too dry then it tends to burn too quickly.
It also depends on how wide your slots are.
As far as a camp stove or source warmth of it is very efficient. Although it takes some time to get up to a decen.t flame from time of ignition.

If you have a real big log (twice that size) you can divide it inti sixth. But they all take some time until they are going, keep that in mind.
