Guam Residents Organize Against US Plans for $15B Military Buildup on Pacific Island

The United States is planning an enormous $15 billion military buildup on the Pacific island of Guam. The project would turn the thirty-mile-long island into a major hub for US military operations in the Pacific in what has been described as the largest military buildup in recent history. We speak with Julian Aguon, a civil rights attorney from the Chamoru nation in Guam.

  • the most violent people are....people,period.man is prone to sin.to do violent things.big religious organizations are evil.but GOD is always good.i cannot prove to you the deity of Jesus.but i believe he is LORD.believing on the LORD JESUS CHRIST is a prsonal thing to me.and i've made the journey to come to that conclusion.your personal belief is yours and will always be respected by me.as far as islam,it's out there in the open.form your opinion.i have mine.

  • @salupaginahit

I would agree with you. I know many Muslim people who follow Islam and they are nowhere terrorists. They are like you and me. Are there extremist in every religion, yes. Religion in itself is a whole different topic. That is what I will say on it. As most Chamorros', I was raised a Catholic. I have come to appreciate other people, their cultures, their food, their beliefs.

  • carpet bomb?there would've been nothing left.war is terrible.you know what happens in war?everything bad you can think of.now we're mad at america bombing us but nevermind the japanese what they did.bad things happen in war.it takes more courage to forgive and move forward.l know alot of natives who say,yes alot of bad things happened but it's better than being under a dictatorship.i go in and out of indian reservations.

  • @salupaginahit

Yes carpet bomb. Have you seen pictures of Guahan and Sa'ipan after WWII? That generation is passing. Japanese did horrible things. More islanders died in the bombing of Saipan and Guam than the those killed under Japanese occupation. War is bad. United States has to live with being the first and only country to use nuclear bomb in war. Then they decided to test more nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands. Either way, oppression is evident, today as yesterday.

  • @salupaginahit

What would you say if the freedoms you speak of are eroding? Fascism looks likely in the land of the "free".

  • you're right, not all muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are muslim.

  • @salupaginahit

HAHAHAHA. I bet that's what Native Americans were thinking. They've been fighting terrorism since 1492. They must be thinking that their enemies aren't these light-skinned people. They are MUSLIMS!

Or, terrorists are those who CONTINUE TO BREAK INTERNATIONAL LAW BY STRIPPING PEOPLE OF THEIR LAND, REMOVING THEM, SETTING UP ILLEGAL BLOCKADES. Would you be a terrorist if you were living in those conditions?

How about racists? Too strong? Maybe prejudice.

  • IF THEY DROP ALL THOSE BOMB THAT ISLAND WOULD NOT EXIT

  • We should have let you to the Japanese.....

  • Most of the Locals were in camps (Yona & Chalan Pago Ordot) not in Agana, and they did not do carpet bombing you need heavy bombs to do carpet bombing all U.S. aircraft came of of U.S. carriers, Agana got ripped apart by the fight in the town not by bombs from planes>>>>>

  • we all know of the nuclear testings.france was the last to detonate in the pacific i think in the nineties.i would wish for a utopia in the pacific.but the world is smaller now w/high tech media.i mean look at us instantly communicating on-line.i had to use a roll of quarters to talk to my mom while in basic training.there's a bigger picture to look at today.very unstable times.hey i thought the cold war was bad.but we were on our toes.now, people are indifferent.the theme is,"me,me,me".

  • fascism is trying.but we still have elections.but you're right.we may be in the twilight of freedom.european countries are collapsing bcause of socialist/marxist idealogy.obama and the democrat majority are socialists. so it's moving swift.dictatorships or aspiring ones, need a barrage of crisis to implement policies that would make a people dependent on the government.leading to serfdom.but i'm still here.and, wether you agree w/me or not,i will fight for your freedom too.

  • and the laughing and ridicule commence.but i'm used to it.historically, all the other chamorros would laugh and ridicule us from humatak.i'm light skinned.other chamorros would tell me that i don't look like i'm from humatak.therefore replying, what are we suppose to look like?that's why i don't subscribe to the natibu movement in guahan.my username and email address are names of different parts of the jungles of the south.if you had your way,you would take humatak's land away from us.
