The Hotel Buena Onda, in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, has acted as an incubator for the start-up tour company Nativos Tours. Last week I joined the spirited founders, Maynor and Memo, to open a trail to Buena Vista's peak. The only trails we found, between chaotic jungle bush-wacking, were farmer's footpaths crisscrossed with irrigation tubes and weaving through coffee shrubs. We stumbled upon exotic flora and fauna, as well as domestic animals and crops. The pair of guides shared their deep knowledge of the native wildlife and local cultures. Once at the summit, with a rewarding vista, we found a neat footpath winding back to the city. We won't be winging it next time!
