The Thembani Handraft Project is located in the rural town of Bedford which is far any job opportunities and the initiative offers the local jobless sustained employment. Creatively, they recycle metals and wood (the only place in town offering that service), deconstruct optic cable which a large company drops off. With these materials the plastic goes back to the company, and plastic droppers are made for fencing; thread from the cables is used to make candlewicking duvets. The iron and wood found in the cable can be used for a variety of purposes; the Kevlar is sold; and the plastic droppers can also be used to make hanging chairs/swings. Thembani was awarded Silver at the Impumelelo Innovations' 2010 Sustainability Awards. Their R20 000 prize money was sponsored by the Development Bank of South Africa.
