Mungiki Issues Threats

There are fears of yet another bloodbath in the larger Kirinyaga District by alleged Mungiki who are reportedly keen to avenge the killings of their colleagues. Thousands of fliers allegedly authored by the Mungiki were last night scattered in at least 18 trading centers in the area with a chilling message, warning that the Mungiki would behead as many people as possible any day from, not only to avenge the killings of their colleagues but also as a gesture to welcome back to the society their leader Maina Njenga who was released from custody last week. The leaflets were in circulation barely 2 days after local vigilante youths killed 2 suspected Mungiki members. But the government is calling for calm saying security intelligence in the area had been boosted to avert a situation similar to the one in April, where nearly 30 people were killed by suspected Mungiki members in revenge attacks.
