As an old Carpenter fan, I genuinely appreciate these young artists paying a tribute to Karen, Richard, and their music. It is impossible to equal what Karen's inimitable alto and soul did with this song, but it is a nice, jazz-like rendition nonetheless. It is funny though -- no amount of glitz and glamor can substitute for that special way that Karen had with a torch song.
I think as a tribute, this is a good tune... Re-arrangement was necessary, cuz no one is gonna pull off what Karen's smooth silky perfection did... She held a pinnacle reserved for one. (IMHO of course). It must've been hard to slow it up, just having the ghost of Karen's voice singing it the old way...
@imalittlemidget i agree. kimberley just doesn't make you feel the melancholy that karen makes you feel through her inherently melancholy voice. oh, and karen's low notes on this song send shivers up your spine. she was born to sing this song. But on the other hand, this is a tribute, so i appreciate the effort.
I went to watch this programme wondering what it would be like because I only knew a couple of Carpenters songs (both of which I loved) and what I saw was amazing talented people perform beautiful covers of these songs. Beverley Knight, Jamie and Kimberley and Ronan Keating were some of the singers that stood out. This was my favourite of the whole night, it is SUCH a beautiful cover and Jamie is just amazing at rearranging a song like this. Fantastic.
