My friend Michael Morpurgo's amazing movie of War Horse is premiered in London today, which gives me the idea of drawing a War Horse based on my Grandfather's First World War experiences in the Essex Yeomanry. He was one of the last British soldiers to ride into battle on a horse at Ypres on the 13th May 1915. My Great Uncle Wilfred was injured that day and died of his wounds on the 23rd, ten days later. Great Uncle Victor won the Military Cross.
This drawing is inspired by a picture in the family photo album. you can see more warhorses at the Essex Yeomanry website on this great collection of First World War photographs http://www.essex-yeomanry.org.uk/history/picture-gallery.html where you will see more War Horses and details of their tack.
