Chapter one

I woke up with the sun in my face. Then, I heard a sigh from my bedroom door. I prop myself up on my elbows, rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and see Devon Kramer. Devon is my
best friend. Devon lives with me and my parents. Mom and dad took Devon in and raised him as their second child. So we're not related in any way. At first, we didn't like each other that very much. We argued over a chore, who does this, who does that, etc... But, after a few weeks, we started to get along. So, it worked out fine. Mr. and Mrs. Shadow adopted me. I don't remember a whole lot about my past. But I hope that one day I can remember my past because I want to know why I was put in an orphanage, and what my birth parents were like. Right now I'm fifteen and going to be sixteen in a few months.
Then, I lay back down on my stomach. I felt the bed seep in as Devon sat on the edge of it. I felt his hand on my back.
"Wake up Sophia," he says, yawning.
"Why...?" I said, sitting up.
He sighs. "School starts in half an hour." He stands up and walks out. As I sat in my bed, I was thinking up a million things to say to him. But he was gone before I could say
anything. Devon's been acting up lately and he won't tell me about it. Usually he tells me everything. I sighed and take the covers off of me. I go over to my dresser, picked out the
clothes I wanted to wear, and walked out my door across the hall to the bathroom. I closed the bathroom door behind me. I was thinking of Devon while I was undressing. I turned the shower on and walked into it. The hot water hit my body and woke me up. I haven't been getting enough sleep for the last year and a half. Whenever I close my eyes, I always have nightmares.When I wake up, I end up crying and it interferes with everyone's sleeping too.
When I was all clean, I got out of the shower and dried myself off with a towel. I got dressed and did my morning routine. When I walked downstairs and into the dining room, Devon and my parents were already eating breakfast. My mother looks at me, smiles, and walks over and hugs me tightly. "You two are
growing up so fast!" She's always this happy. I don't know how she does it this early in the morning. "I can't believe that you two are high schoolers now."
When I sit down next to Devon, my father walks out of the room for a moment. When he comes back, he has a camera in his hands. "Okay kids," he says, fumbling the camera in his
hands, "It's that time of the year again and I want to get a picture of you two before you go to school."
I sighed and grabbed Devon's hand. "Let's get this over with," I said and Devon follows me into the hallway. After a couple of minutes, I realize that Devon doesn't let go of my hand.
Instead, he laces his fingers through mine. I blush unexpectedly. My father takes the pictures
and I look up at Devon. He looks back at me and let's go of my hand. Then, I see a rush of red flooding his cheeks as he looks away from me. We walked back to the table, with my hands at my sides as we sat back down at the table.
As we started eating, we kept on glancing at each other. Could Devon be in love with me? Well, we've been together for almost two years so it could be possible. Can we fall in love?
During the summer, we played a truth-or-dare game with our neighbors, Zack and Kate Winters. We were picked to do a dare. We were dared to kiss each other for a full minute. Devon kissed me for a full minute and I was the one who pulled away. When we were done eating, we walked outside. The sun beated down on my face as we walked towards my mother's car. When we got settled into the car, I fell asleep on Devon's shoulder.I was asleep for fifteen minutes before Devon wakes me up again. "Wake up Sophia. We're at school now." I sat up and rubbed my eyes again. We both got out of the car and walked towards the school.
