Zenith CH 701 Flying From a Short Grass Field

A short video of my dad flying his homebuilt Zenith CH 701 from his farm south of Tallahassee, Fla. The field is about 1,200 feet long, but the plane only needs a fraction of that to take off and land.

Still, it looks tiny from the air, that's for sure!

how much do these things cost?

You've got to build them yourself. Bare bones build with the small engine, probably in the $30K range. With lots of instruments and the big engine, probably in the $70K range. All the money is in the engine and panel.

By the way, the plane looks fantastic.

Is it a base model, or did you add extras?

It's got the Rotax 912S engine, which makes 100 horsepower. The standard 912 makes 80. Besides that, it's pretty basic. He was going for light weight and high power.

+1 on cutting down some more trees. A power failure on takeoff would be a disaster.

Nice vid! I've been looking at Airdrome Aeroplanes, Kitfox, but nothing comes close to the 701. Great plane, great vid, great fun- tomorrow, the next day, next day, next day...
