A short video of my dad flying his homebuilt Zenith CH 701 from his farm south of Tallahassee, Fla. The field is about 1,200 feet long, but the plane only needs a fraction of that to take off and land.

Still, it looks tiny from the air, that's for sure!

  • how much do these things cost?

  • You've got to build them yourself. Bare bones build with the small engine, probably in the $30K range. With lots of instruments and the big engine, probably in the $70K range. All the money is in the engine and panel.

  • By the way, the plane looks fantastic.

Is it a base model, or did you add extras?

  • It's got the Rotax 912S engine, which makes 100 horsepower. The standard 912 makes 80. Besides that, it's pretty basic. He was going for light weight and high power.

  • +1 on cutting down some more trees. A power failure on takeoff would be a disaster.
