A celebration of Nikkou Shownin(日康上人) who has just finished 100 days special Nichiren Buddhism training Aragyo(荒行).
It was held at Ikegami-Jissouji temple in Tokyo, his home temple. So freezing day.
Japanese buddhism Nichiren has a special training program it called "Aragyo(荒行)". The training is to get god bless and become a saint through hard asceticism. It takes for 100 days from November to February, it's the coldest months in Japan.
During the program, the monks have to wake up at 3 am and pour cold water over their head every 3 hours, 7 times a day. The sleeping time is only 3-4 hours from 11pm to 3 am. Reading the sutras and cold water purification, they have to keep doing this training over 100 days. (with the simplest meals.)
Aragyo-Johman(荒行成満式) is a ceremony to complete the training. After the training, the monk get hallowed and be able to be a high priest.
Is this part of Nichiren Shu, or Nichiren Shoshu?
