noooo way that thing is dead

put it in the microwave for about 7 seconds, but take it out if a fire starts

another way of destroying a hard drive is to let the circuit board touch metal =P i know cause i did it by accident

Well, if you want to destroy a hard drive in under 20 seconds, they make this thing called a gun... it works well if you shoot through the discs. :)

Even bent platters can contain information that is recoverable. Bending platters is cool, but it still has areas data can be recovered.
Several minutes of high heat on all the platters can totally destroy the data.
Magnetism cannot survive high heat.
Electron scanning microscopes can STILL pull data off bent platters, or even broken ones, because pieces of platters can STILL have whole files on them intact!

seriously right?

ya know my friend and i destroy old hard disk drives for fun, i love to screw around with computers, and i had a bunch of old 425MB-5GB HDD, we took a mini-sledge hammer to them and beat them until there was shrapnel everywhere! its easy and no data is recoverable, when even the disks inside have no flat surface left, its fun, its easy, and its your best bet to get rid of data, if u really feel like you need more after that, throw the disks in a fire!

that was your mom?

yeah, unless you beat the living tits off the platters, you can get pwned
You do realise that the data's still recoverable...and you've now made it look much more "worthwhile" for anyone finding it.

Second that.
The electronics board can be replaced. As for the internal mechanics, you may be lucky (or unlucky as it may be)
Although the chance of someone going through the trouble and expense of finding a replacement PCB for an unknown HDD found on the rubbish tip would be small.
