SUTTON BANK & BLACK HAMBLETON 1961

With my six month old Ford Popular (cash price £512 on the road), my then girl friend, later my wife for forty years, and I got a little too adventurous at times.
On this occasion we had great difficulty negotiating the far side descent of the drove road towards Osmotherly.
Twenty years later, on the Cleveland Way we found it totally impassable to motor cars. Those were the days!
p.s. my poor aged mother can be seen hanging on in the back seat - poor Flo!

Music - Bach - Suite in E Minor - VI Gigue

Yes - the poor Ford 'Pop' suffered a lot under my adventurous meanderings!

  • What a lovely relaxing video. I actually live in Sutton, Surrey and when I saw this I had to look online to see where Sutton bank is LOL... oo ahh it's up on them thare dales.

A very HAPPY NEW YEAR !

  • There are a lot of Suttons about! This one (the village) is Sutton-Under-Whitestone-Cliff. NOT in the Yorkshire Dale BUT on the south-western edge of the North York Moors. Thanks for your comment.

The new year is going well SO FAR thanks.

  • good lad, you see so many 4x4s being used in the cities, and here's a classic ford saloon being used for off roading. nice one! x

  • Interesting to see the National Park sign at the start - I thought the North Yorkshire Moors park was designated later (1968?)

Used to live between Sutton village & the bank.

Many times a year the road was blocked by vehicles unable to climb it.

The hairpin bend was a particular problem - and still is from time to time.

  • Great video, great old car, i cant help but think we may be being cruel to hujjeb for his comment, "poor car great video, i think he means poor poor car feeling sad for the car!.

I went up sutton bank three days ago with my caravan on the back only just made it in 1st gear low range 4x4 navara, i could not find away of turning around to avoid it before you remind me that it is prohibited for caravans. Word of warning dont try it in a car with a caravan you will not make it.

  • I lived in Sutton - Sutton-on-Hull.

  • I'm amazed that you and the car survived! What fun though. Happy New Year!
