Do you use any particular brush/alpha to get that "sculpted" feel or is it just your ability?

@Baktor Hey man! I don't use a lot of alphas at all(if ever). mostly I just used clay/standard/move/flatten. So I guess it's ability? I don't know. I'm not doing anything particularly tricky with settings. Mostly just default.

and i really want to do this when i leave school what courses or qualifications would i need to get me to where i want to go

Practice? I don't really advocate college for game related degrees. If you want to make 3d art, go to school for illustration or fine arts. It will be infinitely more useful in your development. Tools are tools--learning to draw and paint is much less straightforward.=)
