This is most likely caused due to recent updates by valve therefore increasing security of the game. This could be prevented by passing "-steam" to Launching options. But if you have Standalone Patch 2.9 and Above, this will be done automatically.

There is a bug, by trying to connect to a server you will get following message : Connecting Blocked: Please remove plug-ins before attempting to connect to a VAC secured server.
Extract the Following File in Left 4 Dead 2\bin\, overwrite Existing File(Save the Original File before commenting OverWriting).

what happen to the version? After download the newest version and install SP, it ask for steam launch...Then I reinstall the version from old master update to version 2.0.9.4 and SP 4.1 but it still don`t work...

After that I just try to update to 2.0.9.0 and SP 4.0, it works fine!!

@shotgunmanful Make sure that the game's version is correct. For this sp, u will need to have version 2.0.9.4.
