I know this is an old post but just recently have had this "squeaky" belt syndrome. I thought it was an air conditioner tensioner pulley but after removing the belts and looking closely at one of them I found shards of glass in the V grooves. I remember driving through a bunch of shattered glass from an accident in the last month or two so this has to be it.

@sonofjabba I HAVE A POLICE INTERCEPTOR .... SAME NOISE... THIS MORNIG I WAS ALMOST SURE IT WAS MY PS .. IT WAS REPLACED A YEAR AGO... MY ALT IS BRAND NEW... NOW IM ALMOST SURE ITS THE PS AFTER UR COMMENT....

@sonofjabba My 1996 Ford Windstar has thist same sound. I tried a stethoscope and was sure it was coming from the alternator or power steering pump. I had pretty much concluded it was the alternator because if I put a small squirt of WD40 on the alternator pulley near the shaft it would stop for 2-3 seconds and then start again. I am going to run to Autozone and borrow their pulley puller/installer tool and try the pulley first before messing with the alternator.

what exactly was the problem? my truck makes that noise only at 1300rpms its a diesel an the diesel techs have changed my idler pulleys belt and alternator and its still makin noise its literally driven me insane:(

mine did the same thing it was a cracked power steering pulley

@elvisrn - You NEVER lubricate a belt !! Will make it worse or make it fly off. @jerrit1 - Check the tensioner and idler pulley and see how the belt looks. Mine turned out to be the power steering pulley was pressed on one belt rib width not enough and pressing it on fully fixed it. This was my mistake when I changed the pump.

My 2002 CVPI is doing the same exact thing, a new belt did not solve it. had original 4.6 engine with 90k miles.

Sounds like a bearing going in the alternator. I had a T-bird with the identical noise. I replaced the serpentine belt which had cracks but it didn't help with the squeak. Not long after my alternator went and after I changed it out, problem solved. This looks to be a similar set up with the auto tensioning belt which can't be tightened.

@hunkatiel Wrong... Power Steering Pump pulley was not fully pressed on.
